I know I don't have experience with this but I've done some looking. You might opt for 2 larger servers have define half of you users to use 1 server as the xserver (in the lts.conf) and the other half to use another server.
You should be able to swing it so you fairly redundant and all you configs are located in 1 place (only one place to make config changes) I'm sure that is quite a setup (more then you normal) to get this all running right. I even think someone made a package to auto choose which server to run X on automatically checking the load on available servers and picking the best.
