You could use servers with 2xpIII or 2Xathlons with 512 to 1024 Megs RAM as this are entry level servers in some countries. For the question of one or more servers, it could be more interresting to use clusters instead of one big server for availability and load balancing. I would use 4 2x686 servers with 1024 or 2048 megs RAM per server (1 server per 40 users and 2048 megs ram as you intend to use KDE). For your educationnal application, you probably need for all users a little more memory than the amount it requires per user in windows (i.e if it requires 64 megs in windows and per user, it will require a little more in linux for all usesr connected to a single server). Of course it needs to be compiled to use shared libs. Finnaly, if it is not necessary to use KDE, I would use Gnome (which hangs fewer times than KDE) or a lesser memory hungry window manager. I use IceWM wich is memory, cpu and network bandwidth friendly and doen't hung like KDE. Remember that ones loaded, you application GUI will behaive and look nearly the same under any window manager. I used KDE but now I use IceWM as my terminal users need to run an application in full screen mode through a citrix client. So why wasting network bandwidth.
