Hello list, a problem we have been working some time on has finally been solved, and possibly someone is interested in our solution.
Situation: Debian 3.0 based server, Mozilla 1.0 For several reasons, we decided not to opt for konqueror or galeon. So we took mozilla 1.0 and encountered the well-known problem of mozilla rejecting to run for the same user on several displays at the same time... Our workaround was to have one profile for each client machine. Instead of running "mozilla" from the icewm menu, we created a script "mozilla-starter" that calls mozilla with the parameters "-P <hostname>" where <hostname> had been created as mozilla profile before. This works well on usual operation, but we cannot (and do not want to) restrict our users from just switching their terminals off when done working, so it occured that mozilla was terminated abruptedly and didn't come up again but showed the profile chooser. With some testing, we found out that there are mainly two files important for the detection if mozilla is running. So we expanded the script so that these two files are restored to sane state (e.g. removed :-) at each mozilla start. Now it runs, as far as tested till now really stable. And one nice side effect is (as that "group account" is for guest usage) that bookmarks, layout settings e.g. are restored to sensible default values. If there is any interest on a documentation for this, I could make up a howto. It's not much to do for this setup working, anyway.
