There are several flavors of Wine available that work to various degrees. The original and totally free version is here: http://www.winehq.org/ Another "flavor" of wine that has produced good results for some of our Windows based, graphically intensive educational apps is WineX: http://www.transgaming.com/ We've used the WineX and WineHQ's versions under LTSP with no problems. The WineX binaries are proprietary but the SourceForge project sources are available from the link below: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=17631 Another proprietary version of Wine called CrossOver Office is available from CodeWeavers: http://www.codeweavers.com/home/ CodeWeavers claims that CrossOver Office will run the Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 apps: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook in addition to Internet Explorer, Visio, Lotus Notes and Quicken. The Xandros distribution is currently bundling CrossOver Office with their desktop OS product to provide Windows compatibility: http://www.xandros.com/windowscompatibility.html CodeWeavers has contributed a lot to the evolution of the free version of Wine and is a great company to work with. They also have their own free version of Wine available: http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/download.php Getting arbitrary Windows apps running under Wine isn't a trivial undertaking and few will work perfectly "out of the box". You can get acceptable performance out of some, others with run after some tweaking and still others will refuse to work no matter what. If you hit a dead end, there's very little you can do since most Windows apps are closed source. Wine is still classified as "alpha" software... which becomes obvious after working with it for a while. :) Still, it's a viable approach to getting Windows stuff migrated to and working under Linux.
