You could use rdesktop (implements the rdp protocol used by Windows TS) on the linux machines. I know of a setup for a school (uses a homegrown LTSP-like system) that has an icon on the standard desktop to fire up rdesktop. They run a powerful linux server and a small windows TS for the software they really need and that cannot be run under linux (through wine). This has two problems though: 1. You need Windows licenses for the OS, per seat and for all the non-free software you are using. 2. You load the linux-server double-time since rdesktop runs on the linux TS and itself accesses the windows machine. If you think you need windows apps, try the following (in order; if one succeeds: great; if, not, go to n+1) 1. Try to find a viable open-source alternative 2. If you only need one seat (or few seats) maybe use a separate PC (video editing e.g.) 3. Try WINE, WineX. 4. Try Windows TS I think vmware has no advantages over 4. so I would not use it in schools... > I believe that the economy is cornering more and more > companies to consider life saving cost reductions and > once they use it they realize that the quality of OS > SW is much better than other alternatives. The above suggestions might help to bridge the time until everything the company wants can be accomplished with free software.
