There exists two Free Software projects that does what vmware do:
plex86 and bochs. The URI above is about a linux BIOS. You seem to
want an emulator. There are packages for both plex86 and bochs in
Debian, and probably in other distros as well.

plex86 is for the ix86 arch only, while bochs can run on other
hardware. plex86 is faster than bochs.

For windows applications, I would rather choose crossover office or
win4lin, than going for the full virtual machine thing. while plex86
and bochs are free in terms of licences and money, they are probably
rather costly when it comes to CPU cycles...

But don't take my word for it, I haven't tested any of them.
