The original specs are entirely sufficient to run as either diskless gui workstations or standalone gui PC's using lightweight Linux and best of breed lightweight apps. The FreeGeek Michiana lab in South Bend is testing a Compaq Deskpro LTSP "server" and eight workstations running IceWM on top of RH 7.1. The server is a p-2/450 mhz cpu with 256 mb of ram. The thinnest workstations are p133 with 1024k S3 video chips. The fat ones have a p200 cpu. X servers are set to 800x600/16-bit. Your video cards should do 1024x768/24-bit easily. The "server" and workstations run amazingly well. We use Squid web proxy to speed up browsing since our Internet connection for the lab is dialup. FreeGeek Michiana also installs Vector Linux 3.x (Slackware 8.1) on donated P90 to P133 boxes (FreeBoxes) which we refurb and distribute at no cost to graduates of our introductory comptuer course for low income families. All the boxes have 32 mb of system ram and 1024k of video ram. We are considering RULE so we can standardize on one distro. http://icewm.sourceforge.net/ http://www.vectorlinux.com/ http://www.rule-project.org/ http://www.gcn.com/archives/gcn/1998/august31/1D.htm http://www.freegeek.org/ http://community.michiana.org/freegeek/index.shtml The last url, FreeGeek Michiana's home page is actually not ready for publication. We just started work on the web site last week. But I thought you might want it for future reference.
