I am not pointing fingers, I am saying in general, trying to do this
sort of Windows-world locking down on a Linux system is a sign that
the system administrator does not know what they are doing; if all
proper patches are applied and things are properly secured, students
should not be able to 'hack' a system. If that happens, I blame it on
the system adminstrator.
Reasonable people can disagree, and I do. I think it means he/she admits
they are human. You would be better off to admit this.
I disagree with you; I see no problem in letting people know how
something works. Too often I've seen FUD used.. as in "you will be
suspended if you open an xterm". And this is inexcusable. A school
is a place of learning. That, however does not apply to the computers
in which learning is strictly not allowed.
Linux is the wave of the future, and I strongly believe people need to be
educated about it. I even teach our (student, btw) tech helpers how to
write the config files and what they mean, HOWEVER I couple this with
teaching them respect for the system they are on... Something they don't
get when they snoop around on their own in a dark dormitory at night...
which I'm sure some of them will do/are doing even if I get this setup how
I want... In my mind, I don't envision spending the time to lock down
Open Office, Swriter, close up SSH, and a whole host of other apps. I'm
targeting a very specific audience with this pseudo-chrooted graphical
shell.
If anyone would like to further debate the philosophical implications of
the My Documents icon and the Linux environment, I can be reached in my
office after class.
