have not tried this, though i do have the workstation on runlevel3 and
run the X server manually to test the mouse. do i just have to type
insmod serial.o at a root shell, and then manually start X?

"Serial" is how it is set in the documentation and is how i use it.

yes, and the mouse and the whole hardware works fine in a non-ltsp test.
