This is Xserver failing to get proper mode-lines for your screen. Most
likely, I am shooting in dark here without knowing full details of your
hardware, you are using a display card with less than 2mb RAM. As
general rule cards with less than 1mb will show 640x480 resolution only
and less than 2mb 800x600. I am assuming this as you mention old P1-100
machine. You need to set up proper mode resolution in lts.conf file for
this workstation something like:
        X_MODE_0 = 640x480
or even a full mode line like:
        X_MODE_0 = 640x480   25.175   640  656  752  800   480 490 492 525 
-hsync -vsync

Please be careful as this is one line and may appear wrapped in to two
lines due to limitation of your email reader.
