Yes, GLX w/ DRI is no use for thin clients as your desktop is remote. So
the only way to achieve 3D HW accelerated desktop is via:
- AIGLX enabled X server (+ DRM and DRI capable X drivers - is should be
possible with lots of graphics cards)
- XGL based X server (+ brand new drivers)
- Mesa OpenGL failover (only used for GL part not implemented in
hardware) library common for both client/server

Exactly, the texture data is the cause here. In reality, 3D desktop
should lower the amount of data to be send to the client.

Summary:
3D on clients is quite easily doable with NVidia and maybe Intel
graphics cards and Xorg 7.1 and newer + appropriate MESA.
The problem now is, that a thin client with Nvidia card using .9xxx
drivers is everything but a thin client - the card itself is probably
huge, as a fan and consumes lot of power, right?

What we should be aiming for are nice and decent AIGLX enabled drivers
for Via platform as all REAL thin clients I know (small footprint,
fanless) are based on Via Epia boards. Unfortunately I can not see any
fruitful future in this area :-(.
