sorry for asking that silly question:

Do you activated the correct audio device via the KDE control center? 

I am having first the same problems as you (xmms worked, kde not), then I 
chose the "Enlightend Sound Daemon" (also deactivated "full duplex" and 
enabled "networked sound" there) in the control center and anything works 
fine (after restart the terminal :-(  ).

I have also installed the esound packages on the server.

Again, this is only a silly hint. I am sure you have chosen the correct audio 
device in the control center.
