Well, since both sessions and running really on the server, being local 
or remote X must not make any difference. Are you using bash in both? 
can yo make simply "export" to see the whole list of exported variables?

About configuring KDE, that must be done ALWAYS as the user which will 
run it. That is, you will need todo it once for every single user. 
Thanks God for the Kiosk mode ;)

About choosing ESD in KDE and the error message, try the troubleshooting 
steps in the Sound page, specially the 'esdplay' one. And be sure to 
have the loudspeakers connected to the client.

If you still have problems with that, we'll troubleshhot it step by step 
here in the ML.
