I do not have one: I am running 100% on LTSP :)

This is what I did:
- booted my thin client (HP t5735) into Fedora 9 Live on an USB stick;
- connected to my server over ssh -X;
- ran the Java application in question.

The speed sucks.
I conclude that this is not an LTSP problem.
The same application runs fine in a remote scenario whis the non-Fedora 9 server
though...

It is not just you; it is fashionable to hate Java; I find it very useful
personally.

Thank you very much for your help in triaging the issue.
I guess I'll need to track down some Java/X/Fedora 9 experts now...
