This command reports "fail" and LOCKS the computer display up to the

Tried reversing this "stop" series and "networking stop" complains about
network interface "unknown"

As you can see by my notes it did not go well. Inserting your "default
interface contents" into /etc/network/interface file and restarting the
computer renders my eth0 useless.
Next suggestion?
