Dear all,

I am trying to find out the best way to make use of my Sun Fire Server
and Ubuntu Server OS for LTSP. My main requirement is LTSP and Samba.
LTSP users need a proper office setup in the sense that, they will
need typical office applications like openoffice, pdf reader,
multimedia, image viewer, firefox for internet, thunderbird email,
games etc.. In my experience, i have found that Ubuntu desktop (gnome)
gives all of this.

My question is what happens if i install gnome-desktop or
ubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop etc on top of 64-bit server kernel?
I searched the net and i found so many different answers, many tell me
installing ubuntu-desktop will make the server function like a desktop
kernel. Few suggested installing xorg gnome-core and gdm, which i did
on a separate test system, startx didn't work for me after xorg
installation, cox of empty xorg.conf file and guess bcoz of the huge
flat monitor and video card, after installing gnome-core it worked,
gdm installation gave me a cool login screen after reboot. This is
just a plain gnome interface without much tools or any applications
installed. So, i will have to install almost every application from
scratch, even the network-manager applet is missing! :)

I don't mind installing everything manually, but i am apprehensive
about integration with LTSP and other services. will all the basic
options screen lock, office dictionaries, etc.. work, if i install it
manually. or Do you suggest installation of ubuntu-desktop on top of
this 64-bit server kernel?

A gentleman suggested installing Ubuntu Desktop 64-bit OS from the CD
and then replace the kernel with a server kernel, cox it may integrate
well with the GUI.

This is crucial for me, i need to know how different will the server
kernel behave if i add any GUI on top of it.
There has to be a proper documented way to make LTSP work on a server kernel.

Thank you
