for what it's worth, i have seen cards that don't support 16-bit, 24-bit, or
32-bit color depth, but a freakish, evil 15-bit color depth; haven't
encountered them recently.

Debian used to default to X_COLOR_DEPTH=16 in lts.conf.  it switched to X.org
autodetection after lenny was released (february of 2009), so the first version
in Debian that defaulted to X.org autodetection was squeeze, released just last
year (february of 2011). although some users may have been using backports
earlier, which defaulted to autodetection as well.

to make a long historical story short, X.org autodetection might have hid the
issue in recent years, if cards that can't support 16-bit arre still floating
around (my guess is, only very old setups would have such cards).
