I think you need to install it first, *then* pack it.
At least the help for luarocks pack seems to indicate that.
As for the naming convention, do you mean the name of the packaged rock or
the name of your .so ?
If the former, luarocks will give a proper name to the resulting file. You
shouldn't worry about that.
