They are on the CDs, they are just not installed by default. 

If you need them then you install them.

There are over 3,000 apps on those CDs.

I guess linux distributions are becoming more desktop or server specific-oriented and less techie oriented.  After all you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people who use whois in Uganda.

whois is not the only thing to not get default status.  Lynx (my once favouriste browser) is no longer default install.  Kernel-source files (either the vanilla or the Suse kernel) are not installed by default.  The kernel install also makes sure you get gcc, make and other install utilities that are not installed by default.

Sadly, soon things like oracle will be a default install!! while favourite hack tools will be relegated to a techie folder!
