Is the whois RPM not available on your CDs? If not, check the DVD-ROM.

RIPE will give you authoritative data on IP block information and ownership.
ARIN [www.arin.net] is also another good website, especially for
non-European or non-European-associated networks/service providers.

I actually made an upgrade from 7.2 to 8.0 . However I have been able to
use the ripe.net website that has a web basedfrontend for whois.
