Hi Reinier, I do agree with what you say, it all points to the IXP though.

Really! My point was, regardless of who requires access to this repository,
if located at the IXP, gives all the peers wire speeds to it. While hosting
it outside the IXP seems to be an alternative that can be grabbed, there are
a few huddles to get across. There has been unexplained blackouts at the IXP
for all the folks who peer there. Infocom, AFOL, MTN you name it, all of
them have had moments when their connection to the IXP has been abscent. If
any one of these are hosting the mirror, the local ISP will need to hit the
expensive bandwidth to get something that is a drive away. One thing that
has so far been constant at the IXP is that it has not yet gone down
(correct me if i am wrong). The peers may once in a while go missing, but
the IXP itself has not been down.

This was one of the reasons we opted to leave the IXP where it is, neutral,
no strings attached and no financial load on one organisation...i would
think the same would apply for a mirror (my two cents). At the IXP, all
peers can contribute a small fee to keep it running and a few volunteers to
ensure the server is kept up-to-date.

I have seen IX traffic do nearly 128Kbps over

well....lets keep it objective

UTL & MTN have fiber, i have heard, Datanet has a 10Mbps link, Infocom Wimax

which of these companies would do this free of charge? They would be looking
at revenue against the expense of hosting a mirror. Do not forget
international access for this server to sync with the parent site, who bears
the cost of that bandwidth, seeing that costs per meg over satellite cost an
arm a leg and a few eyes?

Again, its just a thought of how best we could put our IXP to use. In my
opinion, it is under utilised.

Of course, you might discount this possibility, but remember that one in
a million chances happen 99% of the time.
