Yes, my phone is GPRS 2.5 and works fine on MTN. Edge is only a recent addition. What is the retail price?

and with a marketing budget that sells them like this:

you know you get hardware for your money, no slick PR.

ah, and no vendor lockin either! Eh, these machines are
- cheap
- open
- slick

have

    *  Wi-Fi (802.1 1b/g)
    * AGPS
    * GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
    * Bluetooth 2.0
* 3axis Motion Sensors (2) Why would you need to wait for an iPhone/GPhone to maybe perhaps come to africa?

serious question: Would the * GPRS (2.5G not EDGE) work on MTN/UTL/ZAIN/Warid networks?

I'm going off topic here but wouldn't releasing a failed product warrant
a little skepticism? Especially considering Vista costs like $250
dollars (or more) in the U.S., If I had just dropped that kind of cash
only to have to wait three years for something that's only moderately
improved I'd be more than a little disgruntled about it.

Meanwhile, things that work out of the box may have flaws, but they
still work out of the box. That's going to earn whoever it is some
points and customer loyalty. I mean, we could apply that same logic to
bungee jumping and I think you'd change your mind. ;-)

Okay back to the Gphone, I think the biggest selling point is the open
source engine behind it. Look at the App store and the iPhone, or go
even a step further to the 'jailbreak' apps. The fact of the matter is
people want to customize their phones, especially people who have the
knowledge and skill to do so.

the only thing the g1 brings is open-source. The problem in the states
is the consumers never forget. If you release a crap product, it gets
tainted and all future releases are met with skepticism.

Take the iphone for example. It has a lot of things that could be done
better. But since the initial release blew people away, the consumers
feel like they can look past what I consider obvious flaws.

The other example is windows vista, which anyone who has used it
extensively will say is a very good product (I use it on my work pc).
But because the initial release completely bombed for various reasons.
MS is forced to spend $200 million on advertising campaign to correct
the general impression as well as focus on the release of windows 7 next
year to try and recover
