No better alternative? You must have missed the boat somewhere on this one. If I can install centos on my iPhone? Dual boot so I don't loose my original functionality and then use that second installation to accomplish way more than the original OS when I'm in the field for example.
If you were able to accomplish more from centOS than OSX, then why not? Besides, it is all about applications after all, not the OS.
I'm willing to bet though, that there would still be more apps available for OSX than Linux on the iphone even after 10 years of existence, despite Linux's open source model.
