Hi,

I've been facing the same dilema as the products advertised seem to be geared to two streams/threads of clients,

A UNTETHERED> Clients use their phones to browse the web and pay for data per kb (just like you pay for phone calls on MTN currently). The settings for the APN that gives this set up are the ones usually sent to your phone.

>Clients will subscribe to the telecom company for blackberry services (which I believe involves a monthly subscription of about 90k to 120k for your phone to give you e-mail access ONLY
B TETHERED > Clients buy the little dongles exclusively from the telecoms OR

clients use their own phones(this is allowed grudginly by most telecoms) and subscribe to the telecom for a monthly fee (of 80k for Warrid and Orange,90k for MTN I think)

NOTE:

>Not heard of an untethered monthly data plan that lets you sort out your needs (as you seem to want to) from any telecom here so far > Warrid are the only ones I know of offering a daily data plan for like 5000/=
> The average speeds I've seen are
8-16kbps(1-2kBps) with highs around 64kbps(8kBps) for a few seconds/hours at night for Warrid and MTN GPRS,
16-32kbps(2-4kBps) with the highs also around 64kbps(8kBps) " for Orange

My advice is when you land,

1a)If you have your own local sim cards, insert them into your phone and settings should automagically be sent to your phone for all networks
(I'm vouching for Orange, MTN, Warrid which I have personally tested)
These usually set you up for a pay as you download OR pay per Kb of data)so accept/save these. Load the phone with credit as low as 1000 shillings and browse the web to get a feel of the speeds.

1 b). If you don't have any local sim cards, you could either get one from a friend to perform the above test initially.

Either way once you've set your mind on a provider,

Insert a sim card for their network, change your settings to the APN that gives you the access you need

subscribe to a monthly data plan that fits you.

NOW SOME RANTING

Having tried out Orange recently tethered in per kilobyte mode, I wanted to subscribe for a data plan (something around 80-90k). All I'm being offered is a 3 month upfront plan for 250,000. When I ask if there is a monthly charge, the front desk lady cannot give me any further information

Also these telecoms websites offer vague information and not kept up to date as much as I would like, front desk guys/girls at most telecom companies' offices don't have a clue what you are asking about when you bring any of this up.

Tech guys are way in the back (where I personally can't get to them hassle free)

any one have any contacts of

managers who can make things happen,

or techies who can speak in soothing tones to a hot under the collar orange client?

please forward them, websites, sales guys and front desk/toll free ladies don't do it for me anymore

thanks,

Hi,

@Mike, i got an error when connecting to http://www.orange.ug/ (the connection to the server was reset)

@eb: orange charges 45000 per Gig. (and less, if you buy more) Just buy a card, shove it in, and they claim they will send your settings to the phone and it will work.

And those prices are published on their website.
