On the contrally, I don't want it when people advise others to use Wine.
In the first place, given the specs of the computer, wine will be very
slow. I cannot use it on my laptop. I remember the last time I used it
to play a game, it sucked.
There are many FOSS (GNU/Linux) products for every thing that there is
in Windows. If someone moves to GNU/Linux, it is advisable to always
stick to the products this side.
The use of Wine is the best way of Marketing Windows with in Linux ( I
think).
To some of the worries;
3) I use vlc and it is better than every thing in the media section. #
apt-get install vlc
4) I use Liferea for RSS feeds and is better than any thing I have ever
used. It comes already installed in Lucid but I had to Install it in
Mint 10. # apt-get install liferea
Other people have other options out there for the few I have not
tackled, no need for WINE.
Thank you

Subject: [LUG] troubled lecturer
Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2011 14:26:34 +0300

Hello everyone, i recieved this email from a lecturer at UMU that i
had just moved from windows to linux. Can anyone help me out on this?

Dear Allan,
I hope you are doing fine. I am also still struggling to acquaint
myselfbetter with Ubuntu 11.04, here at UMU.
But I think I am making someprogress. However, there are some programs
that I need to install into my computer, which I need you to know about
in advance, so that when I come there onSaturday, it will be
quicker/faster for you to do it, so that I catch upwith our transport
back to UMU. The programs are as follows:
1) RevMan 5 (This is a Review Manager 5.1.4 for researchers. It is
alreadyavailable for windows and linux in general. I have failed to get
one forUbuntu 11.04)

2) SPSS (This is a Statistical Package for Social Scientists. There
seems tobe a trial version already of Linux (SPSS 19). I don't know if
there is onefor Ubuntu 11.04

3) RealPlayer (Basic)

4) Google search (RSS feeds). The other time you had managed to activate
itwhen you installed Ubuntu 10.04. Now I can't do it in Ubuntu 11.04

5) Updating (Update Manager can't intall updates from here in UMU. I
hope it
will work from there)

NB. I have managed to install skype by myself, and it is working. My
Skype
name is adaktar. The Sound is also on now, and I can play DVDs without
problems.

If any new problem emerges, I will tell you later.

Thanks.

Joseph.
