I am also very interested in Lustre on Ubuntu. Ubuntu on amd64 is our
standard production platform.

We did the something along the following line when testing on ubuntu dapper amd64:

Grab the 2.6.18 kernel source package from debian etch (and follow the security updates in etch) and install it.

Grab svn://alioth.debian.org/svn/pkg-lustre (the svn repo for the debian packages).

Do dpkg-buildpackage to get the debs.

For the servers:

Install the linux-patch-lustre package and build a 2.6.18 lustre patched kernel suitably configured, if I remember correctly you have to pass --added-patches lustre to make-kpkg. I recommend to take the config from a suitable -server ubuntu kernel and use it as baseline config.

For servers/clients:

Install lustre-modules-source.

Use module-assistant to build the lustre-modules package (patchless on dapper 2.6.15 should work due to the one missing patch being applied in the dapper kernel).

Install the rest of the needed debs (lustre, perhaps more) and run stuff.

This was last tested with 1.5.97 which has 2.6.18-specific patches in the pkg-lustre tree. I don't know the current state of pkg-lustre since 1.6 was released. I've heard rumors of an upcoming lustre 1.6 release that will officially support 2.6.18, we're waiting for that one.
