After I made sure the kernel loaded ok and the modules all worked ok, I aliened the source packages for the kernel and the Lustre source and built it all for Debian using yaird for the new initrd image. Everything loaded fine and it has been working great for weeks now. You could probably just alien the source packages and build from there, there is no patching involved and the SUSE packages give you 2.6.16 vs. 2.6.12. It's a pretty straight forward build.
