We had this discussion not too long ago on the LuteNet. You could check the archives. If you could tally up how many modern lute makers there are/have been in recent past, estimate how many lutes they've made, then come up with a reasonable estimate of how many people own multiple lutes and how many they own, you might have an idea of how many lute owners there are. There is the question of what constitutes a lute player. Is a guitarist who owns a lute a lute player? I would say so. The people who own and touch their lute once in a while could be qualified as lute players for the purposes of a general question like yours, I would think. Using those criteria I would estimate many thousands, 10,000? > I actually got excited when I glanced at the headline "Odette May >Head to South Florida" before I realized they were talking about the >hurricane. Ha, ha. That's rich! cheers, -- Ed Durbrow Saitama, Japan http://www9.plala.or.jp/edurbrow/
