I have found most modern publications are being printed in French tablature. Facsimiles however are copies of the original manuscript and will perforce be in the original tablature whether French, Italian or German. As for getting used to using one over the other I would guess it will be a matter of individual ability. I know some lutenists who not only play but can actually sight read a score they are totally unfamiliar with in all three tablatures with equal ease. I on the other hand prefer French over Italian finding the former easier to work with. I would not even attempt German tab, but that's just me.
