Unlurking to say:

Actually, many folk harpers don't play by ear. Most of us amateur folk
harpers, being lazy dogs, just buy books of predigested harp music converted
into modern musical notation. We leave the playing (and arranging) from
original sources to the likes of Grainne Yeats or Alison Kinnaird. ;)

(Though to be honest, I've only ever seen Welsh tablature so I'm not sure
what form Scottish or Irish or Spanish tablature might have taken, or how
difficult it would be to play.)

Also, btw, some modern harpists/harpers are now arranging music in their own
invented forms of tablature - designed for people that can't read music - but I
find their systems mind bogglingly confusing myself.

Any folk harpers out there? Try harp (clarsach) tablature sometime!
No wonder folk harpers play by ear!
