Dear Gernot, dear all, sorry to speak up so suddenly - I have originally written to Herbert off-li= st but was unsure about the meaning of "berbante". The first two lines of t= he song are clear and I think that Manolos translation transports the sense= of lines 3 and 4 quite truely, too. Also I think that what he and others h= ave written about the possible derivation of "berbante" and its meaning hit= s the nail on the head. I will nonetheless look up the word tomorrow becaus= e it annoys me not to know exactly what it means - usually I have no diffic= ulties with Ladino.
