Thanks, Dan. Yes, beautiful music - a foretaste of the recording I'll be doing with the viol player, Jonathan Dunford, in February. Imagine such airs on the viol - really beautiful, and Jonathan is a major-league player. Looking forward to working with him.
Regarding Eastern European & Asian Steppe stock - plenty of (welcome) evidence of that in Edinburgh these days; not sure about the 17th century, though. It will be interesting to hear Scottish music in three hundred years time... Regarding reverb - I am drawn towards melodies that float in the air, linger a while before disappearing into the ether. A good natural reverb helps sustain these notes for a fraction of a second, tugging at the heart a little longer. It makes a huge difference to the perceived sound. I hear it even in my small room, but I don't hear it on the dry recording. Trying to recreate it with technology is a fools errand, but one I feel compelled to try. There is a difference between hearing the instrument and hearing the music... Rob -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
