Hi Ned!

I am quite the opposite of an experienced player. Yet I feel the need to ra=
ise=20
a counter-question, I hope you will excuse.

Why would you base the choosing of a lute on something as easily changeable=
 as=20
hight of strings at the nut and fret thickness?

=46irst thing I did with my lute, was to change the nut and frets to my lik=
ing=20
(or better said, to a setup I could comfortably play). Isn't that actually=
=20
part of the reason why lutes have removable nuts and frets?

It took quite some experimenting to come up with my personal favourite sett=
ing=20
btw. So much that I actually started to carve my own nuts from raw bones. :=
=2D)

I personally think that choosing a lute should be based on the (hardly=20
changeable) qualities of its body. How does it (re-)sound, distribute and=20
project vibration? How heavy is it? How is the weight distributed and=20
balanced? Pretty looks would not be too bad either...

IMHO Bridge, Nut, Strings and Frets can (and should) be fitted to the playe=
rs=20
individual preferences anyhow.

With best regards
