Not if the nut material is hard enough. Shape of the notch matters too; and should suit the size of string. A nick with a file is the usual start for the notch, some makers use an abrasive-loaded string to round it out, others a fine-toothed v-shaped file. Guitar makers have special slot-cutting files which have a rounded edge, one can gently leran the file to make the sides a v-groove. Some lutemakers use a minimal notch on the peg-side of the nut, the bridge side of the nut is left flat. -- Dana Emery To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
