Easy using software like photoshop, same proceedure is used to measure
leaf surface area and estimate damage to brain coral as seen in
tomographic slices.

take a digital photo which focuses on the rose and includes a rule - best
to have no strings on.

Open the photo in photoshop, establish the actual size of a 'pixel' and
setup an excel spread sheet to scale pixels to cm.

Convert photo to greyscale and manipulate levels so you have only
black/white pixels.  Select the whole photo and bring up the histograph,
it will tell you the count of white pixels, convert the count to cm,
compare to the scaled pixel size for the photo (get info).
