Danny, I have been a gut player for over 15 years, and I can attest to its beauty, as well as its problems.
Many have given a good deal of advice. Davit T's message was very insightful as well. For me, I had a terrible experience in recording the Allemande CD. I recorded the entire CD, only to throw it away, after listening to all the scratchy gut sound. As David states, a part of it is inherent in the true gut sound, crating a "chiff" sound. But, mine was way too much gut squeaking & chiffing, which interfered with the beauty we all seek in our tone production. I was really bummed by it. I was so dissatisfied, in that I kept none of it. What i did, was to re-record the entire CD (groan) using hand lotion. Anything will work any commercial moisturizer, or something like Eucerin. Rather than, as some advised, using some product on the actual string, I instead use a product on the fingers. The results are excellent... no more squeaks, or stickiness!! After the lotion dries, after 2 hours or so, re-apply a small amount. You only need to moisten the finger tips, not the entire hand. I like it for both right as well as left hand. I might suggest that being a surgeon, you wash your hands to great detail, and your normal moisture balance of your fingers may be off a bit. I recommend using any product that is free of fragrance, but that is my personal selection. Moisturizers clean up the sound _and_ the feel of the gut, while not doing any damage at all to the strings.
