physiotherapists often use soft sorbo-rubber balls for hand exercises after 
surgery. These are often of graded density so that the firmer the rubber -the 
greater the work required. Alternatively, you could emulate Capt'n Queeg in the 
'Cain Mutiny'. Did not Humphrey Bogart always have a handful of ball-bearings?
