Yes, I read many of these excellent papers, that I hadn't read until now. The symbolism appears so sophisticated that clearly a badly strung lute could also have been expected to have been recognised as such, by such equally sophisticated viewers, and be part of that symbolism; but there are many other possible explanations, I have to admit.
