Of course not - anything from 2 to 4 should work.

    polished away will make for a lot less interesting music.

Errors are not interesting - they are errors and nothing else.
Of course, the question what to change is rather difficult. Parallel seconds 
are plain nonsense, but a few false relations should be OK.

    And it's
    certainly not as bizarre as Besard. One should restrain oneself in the
    editing process, ideally leaving options open for every possible
    performance; after all, sometimes you need a little extra spice and at
    other times you will want it more blandly.

Spice? We are not cooking music here :)
