Yes and no!  The problem is they were middle (or rather, lower level
replacements for initscripts, devfs etc.  However, in the interests of
marketing and integration (i.e., lockin) its looking like it will be a
systemd+udev+pulseaudio+*kit desktop world eventually because the core
software of the big distros are going that way, and dragging everyone
else along as well, whether they want to or not.  I expect the lightest
desktops will be able to avoid it, but I am using LXDE without systemd
now and would like to know if that will continue or should I jump ship
now.

Have a look at some of the long (very) threads about this on the gentoo
and other lists ...
