I can try to work it into the source, but the main idea is that the custom widget is self-contained - that is, it has no dependencies outside the standard glib/gtk+ ones. This enables complete code reuse between the plugin and a standalone app. Having said that, once the other issues are addressed (such as the ones from your other email, my response is forthcoming), I have no problem with the code for the plugin being modified such that it is tightly coupled with LXPanel - if the plugin is accepted into the mainline.
