I'm planning support for this myself for a long time. And even though I'm
using a layout construct such as you proposal for my personal needs as well, I
think this is the wrong approach. *matter should be implemented in analogy to
appendix, not as a layout.
appendix...., which is implemented in a rather ugly way.
PS. I've implemented maketitle for personal use in the same way as
appendix. Now I can still use the title layout and erts for the authors
and institutions and so on.
