I agree with you that \*matter should be set via the document menu because they are part of the document structure, but not that they should appear like the appendix. I don't like how Appendix is visualized - the red border is more confusing than that it helps. From the visualization point of view, I would like to have \*matter and also \appendix as I proposed in my patch. There's no need for a rather long border around large text parts. I mean in printed books there is also only once a heading that now the appendix starts and that's it, so why should we permanently display that this text line is inside the appendix?

So what about this?: \*matter is set via the document menu, but appears as proposed only once in the text and in the outliner/TOC

That would indeed be useful. Richard's todays new InTOC feature will make this 
possible as far as I saw.
