I agree, most users shouldn't know whether the book is ePub 1, 2, or 3.
For most readers, as long as we provide CSS for the elements, they will
render correctly. (That is the beauty of XHTML/HTML5.) They won't get
all of the benefits of an HTML5 reader, but neither will it destroy the
experience.
