Dear LyXers,

as you know LyX has a lack of development manpower. It is therefore sensible to see where we can save some.

In my opinion our current reversion policy to older LyX versions should be changed.

Reality check:
- If you start a project one of the basic and also most common rule is to use the same software. This was the case for collaborations at the University (for most cases) and is a strict rule for all collaborations in the industry I am part of. - There is no reason why one collaborator could not update to the same software version since LyX is free. (Your admin cannot deny if he hinders you from doing your job you are paid for.) - In case a collaborator can really not update to the latest LyX, it is possible for the other collaborator to use the same old LyX version since several LyX versions can be installed and used side by side without problems.

Well, it is certainly possible to collaborate on several different projects at the same time. There is the possibility that this group uses this version of LyX, and that group uses that version of LyX. Then, there is no "right" version of LyX for me to use, and I may not be in a position to force either group to change. Therefore, it is nice if different versions play nice with each other. Fortunately, many projects are about the content, not about using every recent feature for its own sake.

I have not run into such a case personally, but we can at least dream of the day when so many people use LyX that different versions of lyx is a bigger problem than recalcitrant word documents. :-)

Some organizations standardize software. But in academia, you may cooperate with people in other universities.
