Can you put the postscript fonts (cmsy10.pfb etc.) in .fonts ?
I think that it won't work as fontconfig does not use the "correct" name for
these fonts.
If it doesn't work, try using TrueType fonts from
ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bakoma/ttf/
