Perhaps a compromise would be to add a "public" edit password for

OK, then implement this.

Done. The following file documents this:
-rw-rw---- 1 chr wiki 389 Oct 4 13:43 /home/lyx/www/pmwiki/passwords.txt

The password for editing protected wiki pages is 'booki3Ai'.
I've protected Windows.Windows (and LyX.Welcome).

But anyway, why do we discuss this? We never had a problem in the past as I remember.

There has been spam, but I can't remember anything explicitly malicious (or I'd already have implemented something like this). Actually, when I think about it, the page LyX.Welcome is protected because people had changed it in a bad way.

And the wiki pages states to download for ftp.lyx.org or berlios.de normal users will notice when they see another page when clicking on the links.

Only some of the normal windows users I know would notice the difference.:-(
