I believe the scalable fonts can give better result. Unfortunately
Xfree86 3.3.2/above scale bitmap fonts as well. You can turn
this function off by editing your /etc/XConfigure file, making
FONTPATH like "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled". "unscaled" prohibat 
the scaling of bitmap fonts. Also it
is important to specify scalable font sets like Type1 or Speedo in
fontpath.

Another unfortunate thing in Xfree86 is that there is no
scalable fonts for times-roman. You can get around it either by
1) in LyX, use -*-charter or -*-utopia fonts in ~/.lyx/lyxrc
or
2) copy or download some times-roman fonts. (I copied from
my Solaris box...)
