checktex

Hi,
 
in the Lyx-documentation I found the checktex part. As tried to run the program the menu-point was greyed out in Lyx. I think that means it is not installed on my system. I downloaded the chktex.tar.gz from ctan and tried to install it, but when I say  configure in the ~/chktex/unix folder I get the message command not found. But there is a configure file in the folder?
(Lyx 1.1.4fix1, SuSE 6.4)
 
What am I doing wrong?
