So it likely a problem between the pdf file and gs.

Don't know, here (Solaris 2.8), I find the doc in:
 /usr/local/share/ghostscript/8.14/doc/
 
Must depend on configure.
Maybe you could create manually /usr/share/doc/ghostscript-8.14/ before
running make install ?
